Pete had been missing for more than ten years. He’s an adorable poodle mix who was found last week as a stray in Hammond, Indiana by Hammond Animal Control and lucky enough to have been picked up by animal control who helped to find his owner.

Ed Lighthall said Pete disappeared when he let him out in the backyard for his bathroom necessities. Pete had been able to sneak out of the yard and was likely picked up by someone who never brought the dog to a veterinarian or local shelter to be scanned for a microchip.

Lighthall had no idea if he would ever see his dog again. Animal control picked Pete up wandering the street; the pooch had been wearing a collar with a phone number. When officials called the number, the person who answered the phone said they did not want the dog back they had named Stewie.

So, for those that are asking why it took so long. In order to trace a microchip you have to take the pet in to an animal control or a veterinarian to scan the pet and then track the microchip down. So, apparently the person that had the dog these past 10 years did not do that. Then the dog was running loose in Hammond, came to animal control and we immediately scanned him and contacted the owner
And when the dog was brought into the shelter, he was routinely scanned for a microchip, and that information led to Lighthall. How shocked must Ed have been when the shelter called him?
Pete was found approximately 20 miles away from where Lighthall last saw him.
Lighthall is ecstatic and is enjoying every minute now that he has Pete back.
How utterly wonderful!
