Lifeguards from Mission Bay rescued a Labrador retriever named Sadie from the channel that had been swept away with the current last weekend.
The five-year-old dog Sadie had been visiting San Diego with her owners, Alexis and Brandon, when she escaped from their Airbnb rental home through the front door as the couple had been enjoying a Sunday afternoon football game. Sadie was a quick escapee, and owners were able to track Sadie’s location using an AirTag on her collar. That’s when the dog’s owners arrived at the beach.
As Alexis and Brandon searched the beach area calling out Sadie’s name over and over, a surfer near the beach had alerted a lifeguard he had seen a dog being swept into the channel by the strong current.
Lifeguards and the United States Coast Guard initiated a search operation, but for nearly an hour, there had been no sightings. Officials doubted the dog could have survived the powerful surf, but two lifeguards, Garret Smerdon and Jack Aldredge still held out hope.

The search continued, and just as they were about to give up, one of the lifeguards on South Mission Beach spotted a small snout barely bobbing above the surface almost three-quarters of a mile offshore. The lifeguards sped out on a jet ski and pulled Sadie onto a rescue sled.
- Sadie was exhausted after her unexpected adventure, but luckily she only suffered a few scrapes on her paws from the jetty rocks. Many thanks to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and the many volunteers who came out to help find Sadie.
