Over the weekend, at the Belleville Area Humane Society in Belleville, Illinois, the animal care team arrived in the morning and found a small crate sitting in the back parking lot. Inside was a tiny Chihuahua with a brief handwritten note:

hi my name is nova. I need a home
Nova had not been wearing a collar. He had no microchip, and there was no information. He was just a little dog with a whole lot of hope, but scared, alone and very cold.
Before the shelter blamed the person who abandoned their dog, they did want to take some time to remind owners of the bigger picture. Animal rescues and shelters may not be perfect, but they are safer than abandoning a pet along a rural country road or out in the desert where wildlife predators stalk the plains.

The Belleville Area Animal Shelter is a place for people to turn to when they don’t know what else to do.
Someone trusted us enough to bring Nova to the place they believed would keep her safe. With animal control closed on weekends, we’re the only shelter in the area open to the public, and we know that sometimes people feel like they’re out of options. While we never want pets left outside, we are grateful that Nova was brought to a place where she could be helped instead of abandoned elsewhere.
Because pets and people are struggling and because someone out there believed the rescue would show up for Nova, they were right.
Nova is now safe, warm, and loved by the rescue team. And no matter how she arrived, her story is moving forward with compassion, not judgment.
Your support matters. Sometimes, there is just so much more to their stories.
Nova is currently on stray wait and not available for adoption yet.
Please share Nova’s message of hope. Please help by volunteering, fostering and/or donating.
