In Doolittle, Missouri, local firefighters came out on Sunday night to rescue a dog named Popcorn after the pooch became trapped in a “12′ to 15′ ” foot hole while chasing a raccoon.

According to the Doolittle Rural Fire Protection District, the units arrived at the “Red Shed” in Doolittle and spent nearly three hours on Sunday evening digging through dirt and breaking concrete areas to get the dog out.

The dog’s owner had stopped to let Popcorn relieve herself when the dog spotted the raccoon, and the chase was on! Unfortunately, the dog followed the raccoon into a deep hole and could not find her way out.
Rescuers had to use shovels, extrication tools and lots of muscle and grime to get to the dog.

Popcorn was lucky; she suffered only from a few cuts and abrasions and is expected to make a full recovery. As to the raccoon, the fire department officers stated the hole had been big enough for the raccoon to get out, and it is likely when the noises quieted down and everyone left, the raccoon worked its way out and probably had a quiet giggle.
