At the Popcorn Park Animal Refuge in Forked River, New Jersey a rescued rhesus has a new home, and he’s one lucky monkey!

The monkey named Forrest was one of 21 monkeys that had been involved in a truck accident on their way to a biomedical research laboratory in Mississippi. The truck overturned on Interstate 59 and for a week Forrest had been on the lam.
After the accident, eight monkeys escaped; the tragic accident made national headlines drawing concerns over the welfare of the monkeys. Most did not survive.
And then two of the three surviving monkeys were shot and killed.

Luckily, Forrest was the last survivor and was able to be captured. Because he had been on the outside during his escape, the laboratory would not take him.
That’s when the team at Popcorn Park Animal Refuge stepped in and offered Forrest a lifelong sanctuary. When he arrived, he had no named; his tattoo had been his identity – “NI 62.”

As he settles into the Monkey House, Forrest is getting used to his new home. Imagine, how he must be feeling going from a lab to a friendly setting with kind and compassionate caretakers, other monkeys ready to meet one another and being introduced to new foods. So far, grapes have topped the list!
Today is Giving Tuesday, and you can give Forrest, and thousands of other animals at AHS and Popcorn Park, a second chance at life. Your support provides the food, veterinary care, and enrichment they need to thrive.
