A 17-year-old rescue horse needed the assistance of Martin County Fire Rescue in Palm City, Florida on Monday afternoon. The Special Operations team responded to a unique call for help — the emaciated rescue horse needed assistance at The Liberty Barn in Palm City.

Ms Cherokee went down again and we needed a little extra help to get her up. We are working to source a sling to be able to help her a little easier.
The emaciated mare, recently saved along with her 14.year-old stallion, by Dr. Karie Vander Werf, is currently being nursed back to health. On Monday, however she had a scary setback; she fell and couldn’t get back on her hooves.

Using specialized rescue equipment, the crews worked carefully to lift her back up.

Everyone in the barn was relieved as the mare was finally back on her hooves.

Many thanks to the Martin County Fire Rescue for coming to the rescue for both two and four-legged alike.

Thank you to The Liberty Barn for the work you’re doing to give these animals a new lease on life.
Rescuer Lori Van Tuinen personally thanked the crew and promised to provide updates:
MCFRescue give us 3 months and you will not recognize this little girl! We will send updates! Thank you from the Liberty Barn Volunteer team.
If you’re wondering about this horse named Cherokee, she was surrendered to Okeechobee Animal Services with her 14-year-old son, Moondance. The horses had no place to go, until The Liberty Barn stepped up to help. Moondance was not in terrible condition, but Cherokee was a mess.

This rescue organization could certainly benefit from donations. If you would like to be a sponsor for feed, they will need Seminole Dynasport and alfalfa hay. We get our feed and hay through Palm City Horse & Hound Supply!
