Diabetic alert service dog detected little girl’s low blood sugar five houses away as she played with neighbor

In Madison, Alabama, a diabetic service dog detected a five-year-old child’s low blood sugar while she was playing with another child five houses away.

Shelby Landreth, the mother of a young diabetic child Paislee, narrated a video on her TikTok page about her service dog, Tracker and how the pup alerted her to her child’s medical emergency. On January 11, Landreth also shared her experience on Facebook stating:

I have heard stories of dogs being able to smell miles away… I have not seen it with my own eyes until today! Today, Paislee was playing at a house 5 houses down and Tracker alerted me to low blood sugar while inside our house! Not only did he alert but he took me right to her!

We are so thankful to have him as a part of our family and to keep her safe. It’s still mind blowing!

Paislee had been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2022. In December 2024, her parents decided to provide her with a service dog who was trained in monitoring blood sugar. Tracker, an incredibly sweet and intelligent golden doodle, soon became part of the family.

A service dog can smell when there’s a change and let us know before it happens or when it’s dropping. Tracker beats technology by about 15 to 20 minutes. …Tracker can pick it up exactly when it hits…

Tracker had not been with Paislee at the neighbor’s home because she is too young to be Tracker’s main handler, however she does have low-blood sugar alerts and wears a glucose monitor; the data is sent back to her mother.

Both Paislee and Tracker will become more of an independent team as the little girl gains more confidence with Tracker’s care.

What is truly amazing is Tracker’s ability to have detected Paislee’s condition. That day he had not walked the little girl to her neighbor’s home and had no idea where the house was. He immediately began to sniff the footprints picking up the little girl’s scent and traveled side by side with Shelby to the neighbor’s home, stopping at the front door.

Fortunately, Paislee had already treated her low blood sugar, but there’s no doubt Tracker is a hero!

Dogs have bee reported to be able to smell for miles, and Paislee was less than a mile away. Tracker is a phenomenal partner, and he was rewarded that day with a tasty bone treat. The video has garnered more than 72,000 views.

Humans don’t deserve dogs, but we are so glad they put up with us.
