Gigi, the tiny miniature poodle who was found wandering the streets of Queens and placed in a Home Depot cardboard box to keep her safe until help arrived, has been reunited with her family.

On May 18, New York City Second Chance Rescue received an urgent call to help a “lost dog” in poor condition. Local shop owners had found the dog alone and crying for help. They placed her in a box and called for help.

President and founder of the popular nonprofit animal rescue, Jennifer Brooks, answered that call; she was shocked and heartbroken when she saw the dog’s physical condition.

This little girl was in horrific shape: Her teeth were covered in thick tartar, and she had multiple masses that appear like mammary tumors. Her body emitted a foul odor, probably neglectedd for a long time.
Jennifer rushed the dog to the rescue’s partner veterinary hospital where the dog began to receive the necessary medical help. From the moment Jennifer met her, the dog had the sweetest disposition. She was named Gigi.
And now here’s the sweetest twist and the happy ending to a story where it had been thought Gigi had been abandoned and neglected. Although the vet examining Gigi thought she was about eight years of age, Gigi is actually 17 years of age! Gigi was not abandoned, and her elderly owners had been sick with worry trying to find her.
Her owners, who have had her since she was a puppy, had been devastated when she got loose during a walk. Without social media, they spent three days walking the streets searching for her. They were determined not to give up. Thankfully a friend of theirs had seen Gigi’s photo and her story on the N.Y. Second Chance Rescue’s Facebook page and notified them.

On Friday, Gigi and her family were reunited.
Being 17-years-old and roaming the streets for three days contributed to Gigi being in the rough shape she had been found.
We’ve offered to help with dental work and a full medical checkup through our community outreach program. Her elderly owners are on a fixed income and we all know how tough it has become to pay for vet bills lately.
The rescue’s outreach program continues to build a relationship with the community and helps people keep their beloved pets; because sometimes all we need is a little bit of help.
This reunion wouldn’t have happened without all of you sharing and spreading the word. THANK YOU for being part of Gigi’s journey home.
Many thanks to all the kind people at New York Second Chance Rescue.
