Dubbed ‘saddest dog’ Kentucky shelter pup finds love at local animal sanctuary

In Louisville, Kentucky, a once stray dog who had been abandoned after his owner passed away, has found love and support at the Tribe Animal Sanctuary.

The seven-year-old Rottweiler and bulldog terrier mix arrived at Metro Animal Services on December 13. At the time, the poor guy had been emaciated and scared. He was afraid to approach anyone and stayed behind any kind of barrier he could find for protection.

The shelter posted his story on social media hoping for some information on him and a possible link to where he had been and what had happened; the seven-year-old dog’s past began to be pieced together. His name was Bear, and his owner had been murdered in 2019. After that, Bear went with a relative, but thar person was incarcerated, and Bear had been left to fend for himself alone.

One family had shown an interest in adopting Dembe, but those plans had not worked out. When the Tribe Animal Sanctuary offered to help, it was to be a new beginning for a dog who just seemed to have had an incredibly bad run of luck.

The Saddest Dog was picked up as a stray in Louisville on 12/13. His intake weight was 77.20 lbs. Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) immediately put him on a feeding schedule. He weighs 96 lbs at the vet yesterday.

When examined by the organization’s veterinarian, Bear has been diagnosed with several medical issues causing him pain. He is on gabapentin until surgery can be scheduled.

We felt with a new year and a new beginning arriving for this boy, he needed a new name. His new name is Dembe (pronounced dim bae). Dembe is an African (Uganda) word, meaning peace. We want to manifest peace upon this sad boy and when centered in peace, happiness and joy spring forth.
