It’s not that animal lovers are any different “across the pond,” but Rachel Humphreys who lives in the United Kingdom, told Newsweek a story about a man she met on an online dating app, and how the date turned out at the very end of the evening.

Humphreys, 28, met Darren on a the dating app Hinge, and the two had exchanged conversations for the last few weeks and were both anxious to meet each other. And when they met, the sparks were still flying, and Rachel was eager to continue dating Darren.

I thought he was conversational and engaging and in person he was the same.

Rachel

The two walked towards the train station, and as Rachel checked her phone to make sure she would not miss the last train home, Darren spotted a photo of her dogs as her background. She had a picture of Tilly, a chihuahua and her rescue pooch Autumn. After Rachel described her beloved pets, Darren went into a huge rant about how he couldn’t stand rescued pets and didn’t understand how anyone would adopt a pet through a shelter rather than buying a puppy they could train. In addition, Darren told Rachel that rescue pets were unpredictable and in most cases not even attractive.

With that, Rachel stopped him right there and told him he needed to educate himself about dogs, stated she was no longer interested in dating him and took the next train home.

If starting in a new relationship, Rachel’s experience just reinforces how important it is to discuss one’s values regarding pets. If having a pet included that sleeps in your bed, make sure your new partner shares these same values. The best advice is to be specific about any and all conflicts, and remember you and your partner don’t have to agree about everything, but as long as he/she is respectful and kind, so what if they don’t like Fido kissing their face?

Making sure your needs are met, your partner’s needs are met and your pets are being treated well is what matters.

  1. Good for her to dump this first class creep!!! I have dumped men who hated animals……..

A clergyman told me that you can tell a lot about a person by how they treat animals. Clearly this creep is NOT an animal lover. I suspect that he would dump a pet if the furbaby got sick or old……..
