In Green Lake, Wisconsin, at the Green Lake Animal Shelter, 104 Goldendoodles from puppies to adults are almost ready for adoption.

It had been in Juneau County at the Golden Doodle breeding operation, Golden Barns, that was shut down because it was not properly licensed. The breeder has since been cited for not having a valid license.

The owner had been allowed to keep four of the dogs according to the town ordinance. She claimed she didn’t have the money to spay and neuter the dogs, thus the reason for so many dogs. The dogs were reported to be healthy, but extremely matted and mostly unsocialized.

The rescue efforts have been putting a strain on the organization. There has been overwhelming paperwork, the task of vaccinating all the dogs, testing them for heartworms and answering phone calls and responding to emails. The dogs have been getting shaved and groomed as well as microchipped.

According to We Are GreenBay.com, most of the dogs will soon to be ready for homes, however will need special care and handling:

“(Most) are not really appropriate to place for adoption yet. For the most part, these dogs are traumatized, they’ve never seen any human beings except this one woman. They have no idea how to deal with the real world. They’re not housetrained, they don’t know how to walk on a leash, they don’t know how to accept a pet on the head. They don’t really know what to do with that information, nobody really touched them that much.”

And there’s more. The latest update from the Green Lake Animal Shelter alleges the breeder has continued to illegally sell dogs, and it is currently unknown how many dogs are really left on the property. Multiple litters have been born and several areas were not allowed entry. There won’t be a final number until the investigation is complete.
