In Bedford Heights, Ohio, last week, a Bedford Heights K-9 officer had been reluctantly returned by his handler to the police department.

According to FoxNews, K-9 Officer Bosco has been under the care of Ryan Kaetzel for the last five years. Ryan, who has been an officer with the department since 2018, wanted to take Bosco with him as he left the department, since the dog had been nearing the point in his career where he could retire. The Kaetzel planned to spend Bosco’s senior years together, but that was not to be.

Last Tuesday, surrounded by family and fellow K-9 officers, Bosco had been separated from his handler and family and returned to the Bedford Heights Police Department.

In a statement released by the Bedford Heights Police Department at the time, Police Chief Michael Marotta stated he had made arrangements to assign another officer to the K-9 unit. Two days later, Kaetzel filed a lawsuit against the police department for “unpaid overtime” and requesting additional compensation for the care of Bosco.

Chief Marotta pointed out that when it involves police dogs, the city of Bedford pays all expenses for care, food and training, and that Kaetzel had enjoyed the benefits of the loving and obedient dog without any of the usual expenses. Even as negotiations continued, animal advocates supported Bosco to be turned over to Kaetzel for a $1.00, and let the family and the bonded dog live happily ever after.

And on Thursday, the department put out a one-line sentence post on their Facebook page:

k-9 Bosco went home with patrolman kaetzel today.

The police did not specify the reason for the sudden change, but the family is ecstatic and all’s well that ends well.
