If you ever thought cats have been gifted with nine lives, perhaps think again – and that kind of good fortune may well include dogs. Case in point – meet one-year-old Eddie, a cocker spaniel who accidentally plunged over a 131 feet down Whitestone Cliff in North Yorkshire in January and survived; he only needed one stitch for an injury on his back leg.

According to the Daily Mail, the dog’s owner, Rowena Adamson, 70, was distraught when she spotted Eddie lying motionless at the bottom of the cliff. The two had been on a hike exploring the beautiful mountain area with a friend last month when Eddie, who is usually glued to his mom’s side, started to venture away. Rowena called him back and decided it was time to put him back on his leash, but he had already disappeared from view.

And when the worried dog mom looked over the edge, there was Eddie – lying motionless. She immediately called for help and rescue volunteers rushed to the spot where the dog had landed.

We got his owner’s friend to call his name and I was amazed to see him move his head. I shouted ‘He’s alive!’

When rescuers arrived at the spot where Eddie landed, they carefully wrapped him in a blanket while making their way slowly back up to the top of the cliff being very careful not to move him and keeping him straight as possible.

And when the men reached the top, a quick veterinarian checkup only showed a small cut on the back of his leg which would require a surgical stitch. Shortly after, Eddie sat up and started to bark!

Once at the visitor centre Eddie was able to stand. A number of other Team members had arrived so one of them drove Rowena’s walking companion back to collect her car. The two friends were then able to travel home and to get Eddie checked over by a vet.

Many thanks to the North York Moors NP staff who as usual were a great help and in particular to the warden who managed to make his way down to locate Eddie.

Nine Cleveland MRT members arrived at Sutton Bank with another five en route before being stood-down by our duty call-out officer who was co-ordinating our response from his work. The incident lasted just under three-hours including return travel time.

No doubt Eddie is the luckiest dog alive. When Rowena asked what she could do to pay the rescuers back for helping her dog, they asked if she could teach Eddie to speak so the dog could give them the next six winning lottery numbers.

Many thanks to the Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team for their bravery and saving a precious life.
