A golfer faces animal cruelty charges after beating a goose to death with a golf club at the Putnam County Golf Course in New York golf on Wednesday.

According to PennLive, the golfer decided to kill the Canadian goose after the bird had been struck with a golf ball. In a subsequent necropsy however, veterinarians stated the goose likely would have survived, and the ball hitting it probably just dazed the bird.

After examining the goose’s body, veterinarians stated the bird’s chest had been swollen from the original hit by the golf ball, however the injury would not have been fatal. Its wings were fine as were its legs, and although the bird had been shocked by the hit, it still had the wherewithal to walk or fly away until it recovered. After having been beaten by the golfer, however, the goose’s head and spine had been fatally separated by the force of the repeated blows.

Humane officers from the SPCA and the State Department of Environmental Conservation responded to the incident. The man who beat the goose with his golf club was described as “almost looking as if he was chopping wood.” When the golfer then walked away from the goose, he saw it was still alive and went back and hit it again – delivering the final blow.

Authorities for the SPCA state that none of the golfers present were veterinarians, and none of the men had any knowledge how serious the injuries had been when the goose was hit. And instead of killing the goose and putting it through such egregious torture, why didn’t the golfers call the police or wrap the goose in a towel and take it to a vet?

The golfer has been charged with overdriving, torturing and injuring animals, a Class A misdemeanor.

  1. Disgusting cruelty. This POS has a reserved place in the hottest part of Hell to burn forever for his cruelty. In this day and age of cellphones, all that he needed to do was call an emergency number and ask for advice on what to do for the injured goose. It might have required a search for the number but that is what a “reasonable person” would have done. That poor goose suffered horrible pain and fear. It makes me sick inside to think of what that poor bird endured😢😢😢
