A dog limping down the road in Travelers Best, South Carolina had been rescued by a Good Samaritan in February. The 16-year-old Jack Russel-pug mix named Nugget soon made national news; the dog’s microchip led him back to Jessie Springer from Farmington, New Mexico, where she had moved in 2016 after having lived in Travelers Rest. Nugget had been gone for seven years!
After seven years the two were reunited, but their time together was bittersweet. On Tuesday night, Jessie posted on Nugget’s Facebook page that the dog had passed away.
It is with a heavy heart that I have to let everyone know that Nugget went home to be with the Lord today at 12:30 p.m.
Nugget was a warrior and fought to make it back home … and when he did, he knew it was ok to just let go.

The miracle of Nugget’s journey, and yes that’s what it had to have been, began with a kindhearted woman who had decided to sit outside on her porch and listen to the rain.
According to the Carolina Loving Hound Rescue, the woman had been quietly sitting outside when she noticed a dog limping down the road in the pouring rain. The concerned woman ran out to the dog’s rescue and rushed him to an emergency veterinary hospital to find out if the dog had been microchipped.
Indeed, the dog had a microchip; his name was Nugget and had been MISSING from his home since 2012. Fortunately, the name, address and the phone number of the owner was still active on the microchip.
Nugget’s mom was found!
And even though the time he spent with his mom was so short, this dog’s story reminds us to make sure our pets are microchipped and to never give up hope.
Rest in peace little guy.
