A Mississippi father helped to save the lives of his wife and daughter, but when he went back into the fiery inferno to save two Maltipoos Daisy and Rocky and the eight puppies the family had been fostering, Khanh Van Duong succumbed to smoke inhalation and died.

According to the MaconNews, Duong, 56, made sure his wife and daughter were safe after a fire broke out in the home early on Monday morning. They were not injured. Tragically, he collapsed just feet from a doorway with the puppies in his arms.

Firefighters said heavy smoke and flames impeded their efforts to extinguish the fire. Duong’s body was later found in the rear of the home alongside the bodies of two adult dogs and eight puppies. The home was heavily involved in fire upon arrival of deputies and firefighters.

Jones County Fire Council

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway. One firefighter was slightly injured, but he is expected to make a full recovery.

Rest in peace Mr. Duong and the canine lives lost in this terrible tragedy.
