In Bronx, New York, a good Samaritan who tried to protect a dog from being abused, was seriously injured after the bat-wielding man who had been beating the dog pummeled the would-be rescuer.

According to the New York Post, police have charged Rubin Bartley, 34, with attempted murder against Marlon Hay, 35, who remains in a medically induced coma during the Sunday afternoon brawl in Mott Haven. Bartley admitted to beating Hay; Bartley’s sister has since claimed her brother had been acting in self-defense.

Bartley had been reported putting his hands around the neck of his one-year-old Doberman when Hay tried to intervene. Bartley then turned on Hay and punched and knocked him to the ground. At some point during the brawl on the ground, Bartley grabbed a bat and repeatedly struck Hay. Surveillance video showed Bartley hitting his victim on the face, head, chest and groin.

Bartley has since denied he was abusing his dog, and although his sister stated he could be rough with the dog, he was not abusing her. The woman told authorities that it had been Hays who went to his vehicle to get a bat and it had been her brother who took the bat and beat him with it.

Bartley was ordered held on $75,000 bond pending arraignment in court.

The dog was not seriously injured and has since been brought to the Animal Care Centers of NYC for veterinarian treatment.
