In Jefferson County, Colorado, a 14-month-old Bernese Mountain dog was rescued last week after two hikers on a local trail in Meyer Ranch Park found the injured puppy.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Jeffco Open Space Rangers and Jeffco Animal Control responded to hikers in reference to a dog bite. The two hikers spotted the dog, and no owner was in sight. As the Good Samaritans tried to make friends with the dog, the dog bit one of them while he attempted to carry the dog down the mountain.

And even after being bitten, the hikers refused to give up – knowing the dog was in pain and needed help. They called authorities, and one of the hikers stayed with the dog while the other person came down for medical help and to help guide the rescuers to where the dog was resting.

One of the rangers remembered seeing a lost dog poster about a month prior. Animal Control called the owner to arrange a meet-up at the trailhead.

The Jeffco Rangers and Animal Control Officers hiked in and successfully brought the injured pup down. The dog, Nova, was reunited with her owner after having been missing for two months. He is a service dog in training and reportedly had slipped out of her harness and ran away. She disappeared from a parking lot at Safeway.

The dog has a broken leg, but it is resting comfortably at home and awaiting possible surgery. Her owner said Nova survived two snowstorms and frigid temperatures. Everyone is grateful for the heroes who helped to save Nova’s life.
