Bittersweet journey of hospice pup shares Melvin’s unconditional love

At the Vintage Pet Rescue in Rhode Island, where senior dogs are the kings of the castle, we meet Melvin. Late last week a message was received from Providence Animal Control Center about a possible hospice dog. Melvin had a very large tumor on his chest, and the shelter vet thought he might only have weeks to live.

We took one look at his face and said, ‘YES!’ We arrived at the shelter an hour later to meet this big, adorable, love nugget. Melvin was found as a stray and the shelter estimated him to be around 13 years old. We loaded him in the van and welcomed him to his new life at VPR!

Melvin will go to the vet next week to get an exam, full bloodwork, and chest X-rays and then we’ll consider our options. In the meantime, he’s comfortable and loved.

On Tuesday. Melvin enjoyed a “SWEET” visit from JoJo’s Cupcakes. She dropped off a generous donation and a dozen PUPcakes for the VPR pups. Did it seem as if Melvin was first in line? That’s okay Melvin.

Hang in there Melvin – you are loved.
