In a heartbreaking accident in Manitou Springs, Colorado, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife have reported the death of a bear cub. The cub apparently had been startled after it had been in a tipped-over dumpster, and as he tried to escape – ran up a power line and was electrocuted.

Garbage kills another bear. See the garbage bin on its side today in Manitou Springs? A bear cub was in the bin when it became startled. It raced up the power pole and was electrocuted. Lock you garbage! Be Bear Aware. Keep cubs alive.

It is not known if the dumpster had been a bear-proof dumpster, however the CPW urges all residents to lock up their garbage especially at this time of the year as bears are waking up hungry after hibernating all winter.

Black bears are very frightened of people and will run away or climb a tree or whatever escape they can find at the moment when they perceive danger. Bears are also very intelligent with excellent memories, so be assured if someone has habitually left trash outdoors easy for bears to find, they will be back.

Colorado does offer grants for communities that want to bear-proof homes, businesses and other areas to avoid confrontations and dangers for both citizens and bears. Please, we can do better for the bears.

We are so sorry little guy.

  1. Totally heartbreaking 😢😢😢

I grew up in “bear, cougar, coyote, hawk, eagle & owl” country along with other predators…… we had to secure our trash, garages, cars from hungry animals……. It was a standard practice that we had to follow. I hope that anyone who has unsecured trash bins will replace them with secured trash bins so that this doesn’t happen again.
