Orange County, FL – A “relentlessly optimistic” dog is anxiously awaiting adoption, but potential adopters who visit the Orange County Animal Services facility ignore her. In fact, some people are so cruel that they flat out state “she is ugly” and say that she will never get adopted.

Why the harsh statements? Dutchess has a deformity on her face. There is nothing physically wrong with her, but she looks different and she is judged for her appearance. On Thursday morning, the shelter wrote:

She was surrendered to us just over a month ago, because of a landlord issue. Her owner told us that she was born with a slight deformity just under both her eyes. It doesn’t affect her in any way except one: people cannot seem to get past it. The heartbreaking part is that Dutchess absolutely adores everyone.

Sharing her hope for love:

She runs up to the kennel doors every day, excited for the new day, relentlessly optimistic. For her, each day brings new people, and with that, new hope for adoption. Dutchess doesn’t know a bad day.

And writing of the heartbreaking comments that have been made about her:

She looks so ugly.
What is that?
What’s wrong with her?
Is she blind?
How much is this gonna cost me?
She’ll never get adopted.

But shelter staff knows that Dutchess is a great dog, in fact, they have said that she is “absolutely incredible.” She is so even tempered that she is used in play groups to help calm the other dogs. The shelter describes Dutchess as “gentle, sweet, energetic and extremely intelligent.”

You can help this incredibly deserving dog find a home by sharing her adoption information. She is beautiful and needs to find someone who can see her beauty.

  1. If I lived in that area I would adopt Dutchess in a heartbeat. The skin beneath her eyes is a very minor detail.

If she’s friendly to other dogs and likes people, that’s what we always look for in our companions.

I hope someone local will open up their heart and home for Dutchess. She deserves to be loved and cared for for the rest of her life by a loving furever family.

  2. I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND THE SHALLOWNESS OF SO MANY PEOPLE! HOW CAN THEY BE SO BLIND TO WHAT IS REAL BEAUTY?! PLEASE LET US KNOW HOW WE CAN SUPPORT THIS SWEETHEART!
