Chicago, IL – In late October, a skeletal dog was found on a sidewalk in Chicago. The dog, dubbed Hugo, was skin and bones and too weak to walk. Hugo was taken to an animal control agency where there were two sad options…euthanize immediately or allow him to pass away in his kennel run.

Fortunately, a rescue group sprang into action after seeing photos of Hugo at the facility. One Tail at a Time was able to get Hugo out of the animal control facility and to an emergency veterinarian. On October 29, the rescue agency wrote:

Last night Hugo made it to the emergency vet, and thanks to a combination of luck, incredible care by a talented vet team, and his sheer will to live he made it. I honestly can’t believe it, but he made it.

Donations were raised and Hugo was provided with round-the-clock care to help him beat the odds. But alas, his miracle did not materialize. On Monday, the rescue group explained:

Hugo didn’t make it.
It’s hard not to focus on all the “what ifs” that have been cascading down. It’s hard not to be angry. We gave him everything we could, but in the end it wasn’t enough. And that is devastating.

We asked the team at the emergency vet to tell us when it was time, and we’re grateful they did. He lost muscle mass and continued to backslide. He was still fighting, but he was losing, and it was time to say goodbye.
We take solace in knowing that the vet team loved him so much. We take solace in knowing our staff was able to visit and shower him with love.

Not every story has a fairytale ending. But Hugo was given a fighting chance. Has shown love. He knew that he mattered.

Hugo

Rest in peace Hugo.
