Florida police opened fire and killed a violent felon moments after the man shot a Lake Wales Police Department K9 at point blank range. The tragic incident took place on Wednesday after 57-year-old Earnest Borders attacked a woman around 5 a.m.

The woman, who had been pulled from her car, beaten, and choked by Borders, called 911 and when officers arrived, the man fled. K9 Max was deployed to help apprehend Borders. Max located the suspect and clamped down on his ankle, reports the New York Post.

The man pulled out a gun and proceeded to shoot the K9 at point-blank range. Officers quickly opened fire, killing the man.

On Wednesday, after Max’s death, the Lake Wales Police Department wrote:

We are filled with sadness, and our hearts are broken. We lost one of our own today, our hero K9 Officer Max. Not long after Officer Joyner met up with his partner, he described his partner and buddy as “fearless,” and he was just that until his end of watch today. Thank you everyone for the out-pouring of love for Officer Joyner and his family and our Department. Please keep Officer Joyner and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Borders was a convicted felon who had spent time in the Florida State Prison on three separate occasions for 18 felonies.
