Washington D.C. – A bomb-sniffing K9 with the Special Operations Division of the Metropolitan Police Department died on Monday in a hot patrol vehicle. According to a release from the department, the seven-year-old Malinois shepherd, named Rocket, was found by his handler late Monday morning; the dog was dead inside a marked patrol vehicle.

The release states:

The vehicle was parked, secured and idling in the 2800 block of New York Avenue, Northeast. This tragic incident is currently under investigation to determine the circumstances that led up to the dog’s death.

All the patrol vehicles are equipped with monitoring systems that send an alert if the temperature exceeds a specific limit. The department is investigating to see if a malfunction led to the tragic death.
