Detroit, Michigan – Last week, a Detroit woman encountered one of the saddest things she had ever seen. As reported by Fox 2 News, a senior dog had been buried alive behind an apartment complex in southwest Detroit.

The woman who found the dog tells the news agency of his gratitude after she pulled him out of the dirt:

“His eyes were crying there was dirt all over his ears and eyes and he looked relieved,” she said. “He kept crying like how could you do this to me, he would put his head however he could lift it up and put it between my ankles. It killed me. It killed my soul.”

The dog, dubbed Ghost, was taken to Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue and the organization got him immediate veterinary care. Sadly, the damage to Ghost’s body was done and despite the veterinary team’s best efforts, he could not be saved.

The rescue group said:

Despite supportive care and numerous efforts to stabilize him, sadly Ghost’s body had been through too much. This morning we had to make the terrible decision to end his suffering and help him over the Rainbow Bridge.
Our hearts are broken for this loss. We wanted to give Ghost a better life here on earth but unfortunately we were not able to do that.
Rest easy poor boy and know that your life mattered to us.

The woman who found Ghost told the news agency that his prior owner was moving somewhere that dogs were not allowed…and that is why he was buried alive. The rescue group has stated that the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office will be taking over this case.
