A woman’s 18-month-old Border Collie died in a freak accident last week from water intoxication after playing in a baby pool for about an hour with only four inches of water.

According to the dog’s owner, Jessie from British Columbia, her dog Winter died on June 11. The video on TikTok posted by jessayyw told the story:

My sweet Win passed away over the weekend due to water intoxication from playing in a baby pool for about an hour with four inches of water.

According to Newsweek, Winter had been playfully splashing around, as he had done many times before and was full of energy. This time, however something went wrong. He had been playing fetch with the owner’s friend and taking a break from the pool when Jessy noticed that Win was getting tired; normal for dogs on a hot day. When Win came over to Jessy however, she noticed his gums were pale, he was panting heavily and wanted to go back inside.

Within just a few steps into the house, the dog threw up a huge amount of water, walked a few more steps and started to shake, drool and whine. Jessy works in the health care field and immediately called the emergency vet for help and performed CPR.

By the time they arrived at the vet hospital, Winter was limp, and although the vets did their best to resuscitate the dog, they were unable to save his life.

The entire ordeal from the very first symptom to entering the emergency vet must have been less than 25 minutes.

Water intoxication, also known as water poisoning, hyperhydration or water toxemia, occurs when an excessive amount of water overwhelms the body thus depleting the animal’s sodium levels. As the body tries to regulate itself, the fluid increases inside the cells causing the organs to swell.

According to the American Kennel Club, (AKC) the excessive water buildup can occur while swimming, diving or water retrieving. The condition is more common in smaller dogs and high energy dogs that spend additional time in the water. If a dog owner suspects their dog may have water intoxication, it is important to get them to a vet immediately.

Watch out for the signs of water intoxication:

Lethargy

Bloating

Lack of coordination

Vomiting

Dilated pupils

Drooling
