Three-year-old Gunner, a K-9 bloodhound ran away on Wednesday afternoon after pulling away from his trainer. The dog had been at a training exercise at Kings Mountain State Park Living History Farm when he fled.

According to the York County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page, dozens of officers immediately began searching for him.

During our K-9 training today the pictured bloodhound “Gunner” jerked away from his handler and ran off into the woods around 3:00 pm at Kings Mountain State Park Living History Farm. Gunner has not been seen since. There are dozens of officers in the area searching. Gunner has his harness and long lead on him. If you have seen him, do not approach him please contact the YCSO right away and we’ll come and get him.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Gaston County Police Department as well as the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office with deputies dispatched on ATVs and later a helicopter sent up to search the area.

On Thursday morning, Gunner was found. It truly was an emotional reunion as Gunner and his handler were reunited. Gunner greets his human with a happily wagging tail and within a few seconds jumps up on his hind feet to give his handler a hug. (We all melted.)

  1. Since Gunner is a bloodhound did the officers once think that maybe he smelled something? It’s a shame they didn’t run after him who, knows he may have smelled a dead body. A trained dog like Gunner doesn’t just take off for no reason. Just my thoughts.
