In a recent Newsweek interview with dog owner Sarah-Jane Ward, who describes her adopted Labrador retriever named Penelope barking in her sleep, the internet has been wondering what the dog could be dreaming? Ward adopted Penelope in 2016 when the dog was five years old. At the time, Penelope became the bonded companion of the family’s older dog.

Penelope doesn’t barks when she’s awake, and Ward shared a clip of her dog in mid-snooze on Reddit’s social media, “What’s wrong with your dog?”

Our rescued dog only barks when she’s sleeping, never when she is awake.

Most dog owners do believe their dogs do dream, and if you have ever watched your dog sleep and saw his legs move and heard little whining sounds, how could anyone doubt that they were not indeed dreaming?

Although Penelope’s mom doesn’t know what her dog is dreaming about, she does suspect the dog is chasing prey.

She will do those little barks and sometimes her whole body will be moving including her paws and her hips. I like to think that she is dreaming about chasing squirrels, rabbits and so on.

So what is Penelope like at home? She is one strong pup, she is food motivated, a lovely cuddle bug and has a very close relationship with her family. And now she has another foster pup in the home to keep her company and give her a reason to bark.

Keep dreaming Penelope – it’s good for the soul.
