A dog who was abandoned outside of a closed Kentucky animal shelter has been reunited with the owner who dropped him over the fencing. In a rather surprising update shared on social media, the Clark County Animal Shelter recounted the man’s explanation for abandoning the dog at the shelter:

Today, the man that left the dog returned and explained what had happened. Due to a medical event he needed someone to keep his dog- he had that lined up with a friend that stood him up. He was close by the shelter so he left the dog in the fence thinking it would be safe. He was embarrassed and shocked when we confronted him today.

The shelter detailed their due diligence to ensure that the man’s story was true:

This man had vet records and photos of the dog. The dog was healthy and very happy. After an extended chat(over 2 hours), fact checking (because we wanted to make sure the story was true) and a lot of education we made the decision to return the dog to the man with some future checkins agreed too.

The shelter understands that not everyone will be happy with their decision, but they believe that they did what is best for the dog. The shelter said:

Regardless of all the mean things being said, if we helped one person learn something that will help keep an animal safe then we accomplished what we set out to do.
