A Madison, Illinois man has been sentenced to five years in prison for the abuse of a small dog named Charlie. Rodney Johnson was sentenced on Wednesday; five years is the maximum penalty in this case.
According to Pound Pets Inc rescue, Johnson, 45, entered a guilty plea for animal torture – a Class 3 felony. He faced one count of animal torture and one count of aggravated animal cruelty.
In February, the non-profit animal rescue rushed the Maltese to the Veterinary Specialty Services in Manchester Missouri after a call had been received reporting the dog had lye poured over him two days prior – AND the dog had not been taken to a veterinarian.
“He was just laying there suffering. It is eating his skin….”, the organization posted.
Miraculously, Charlie beat the odds and has regained partial sight. When first rescued, the spunky little pooch only had a 10 percent chance of survival.
Charlie now lives with Barry Kibler, a vet tech at the hospital where the dog received his life saving care. Charlie remains on medications several times a day and it is not known when he will be available for adoption.
