A San Diego County Sheriff’s K-9 officer named Bo became the hero of the day when he jumped into the driver’s side window of a stolen minivan and refused to release his grip on a suspect. Daniel Medina, 42, was arrested on Tuesday and charged with multiple counts including attempting to harm a police dog.
According to CbsNews, the incident occurred when California Highway Patrol went to investigate a hit-and-run crash. The truck involved in the crash had been stolen and the driver had fled. San Diego County Sheriff’s Department joined in the pursuit of the suspect.
A short time later, authorities learned the same suspect had stolen a minivan and followed in pursuit on Interstate 15. When the driver stopped, he refused to exit the vehicle. Deputies shot out the driver’s side window and ordered K-9 Bo to help take the man into custody.
A viral video showed Bo jump into the vehicle, grab onto the suspect and refuse to let go of the man’s arm even though the man had been hitting the dog with an umbrella. Bo, a Belgian Malinois, was not injured.
Medina also faces felony evading, resisting arrest, misdemeanor DUI counts and resisting an officer. He is currently being held in the San Diego Central Jail in lieu of a $50,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Friday.
