As fears of the coronavirus pandemic stretch across the world, the ripple effect is impacting animal shelters across the nation. Countless shelters are shuttering their doors and staff has issued pleas to residents to hold off on surrendering their pets.
What does this mean for the cats and dogs who are currently at shelters? Suffice to say, things don’t look good. Adoptions are down. And as people lose jobs and funds run low, pets surrenders will increase. The result? An increase in the number of animals being put down.
Shelters are pleading for people to consider fostering a homeless pet while they are stuck at home. What can you do? Reach out to your local shelter and see if they are in need of foster homes. If you have extra cleaning supplies on hand, consider making a donation (the widespread hoarding is hitting animal shelters hard!). If you have a pet that you can no longer keep – please consider waiting until things turn around.
