A badly injured kitten, brought to an animal welfare organization in New Mexico, is recovering with the help of buttons. As reported by KRQE News, the eight-week-old kitten, dubbed Mittens, somehow shattered her jaw and veterinarians are utilizing common buttons to hold her jaw together while she heals.
Nobody knows how little Mittens got hurt. Dr. Nicole Vigil, senior veterinarian with Albuquerque Animal Welfare speculated about what could have happened, telling the news agency:
We’re not exactly sure what kind of trauma she had but whatever happened to her, whether it be falling down from a high balcony, being hit by a car or thrown by a car window, which often happens. Her face was actually crushed and so we do see things like that from falls.”
And explained how the buttons are helping:
They actually used buttons to hold her jaw together and closed for a bit to allow it to heal. The buttons basically worked as stabilizers so some suture could hold her jaw closed.”
If Mittens continues her recovery, she will likely be up for adoption in three to four weeks.
Donations to help Mittens, and other homeless pets in need, can be made here.
