A dog, stolen from her California owner’s home back in 2015, was recently found by police in Sarasota, Florida. As reported by Fox 8 News, Maggie, an English bulldog, was discovered with burglary suspects who were apparently outed by the dog’s presence.
A rash of burglaries in the Lido Key area led the authorities to follow-up on a tip. The suspects had been spotted at each home break-in with a white English bulldog in tow, and a resident on Lido Key let the police know that someone in the area was observed walking a dog matching the description of the pooch who was said to be accompanying the burglars.
Sure enough, when the police investigated, they found Tracie Defee, 52, and Michael Paine, 48, as well as Maggie, hiding in a bathroom of a home on Grant Drive. Animal control took possession of the dog and discovered that she had a microchip which indicated that her owner was in California. A bit more sleuthing revealed that Maggie had been stolen in 2015, when she was still a puppy.
Compassionate police officers helped foot the sizable bill to get Maggie transported cross-county to her true owner. The person who handed Maggie off reported that she recognized her real owner, stating:
As soon as Maggie saw him, she took off bolting, running to him. She actually ripped the leash out of my hand to get to him faster.
The suspects who had Maggie went to jail on multiple charges.
