Lewis, the koala recently saved from a devastating bushfire in the Australian state of New South Wales, has passed away from his injuries. Last week, Lewis was plucked from the flames by a local woman who rushed to save him – removing her own shirt to protect his body and then dousing his burning fur in water.
Lewis was taken to Port Macquarie Koala Hospital for life-saving care, but his injuries proved to be too much for him to survive. On Monday night, the hospital announced that the beloved bear was gone, writing:
Today we made the decision to put Ellenborough Lewis to sleep. We placed him under general anaesthesia this morning to assess his burns injuries and change the bandages. We recently posted that “burns injuries can get worse before they get better.”
Explaining that Lewis’ burns did worsen and they would not be improving. The animal hospital added:
The Koala Hospital’s number one goal is animal welfare, so it was on those grounds that this decision was made.
We thank you for your ongoing support.
Rest in peace Lewis.
