A woman in Lethbridge, Alberta, was horrified to see a police officer repeatedly run over an injured fawn. The horrific incident took place on January 5 and left Erica Pritchard heartsick and shaken. As reported by Global News, a police officer had been called out to Scenic Drive North after a fawn was struck by a car – instead of providing help to the fawn, or putting the young deer down with a gun, the officer used his police cruiser and repeatedly ran over the screaming animal.
The officer used his truck to run over the injured deer – as reported by the news agency, the officer ran over the young deer at least four times, as the fawn “shrieked in pain.” The horror continued for an agonizing 15 minutes. Pritchard stated:
“It made me feel really sick, actually, where we couldn’t watch anymore. We turned up the music a little bit in the truck so we wouldn’t hear the screaming of the deer.”
A cop shouldn’t be running over deer like this. That is actually animal abuse. Someone should take action on the matter.”
The incident is being investigated by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT). Lethbridge police Chief Robert Davis stated:
“After watching the video, I understand the concerns people have and I can assure the community that we take this very seriously. The ASIRT investigation will review the officer’s actions as well as our current policies and procedures for responding to injured animal calls.”
