“So sorry PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), don’t be mad at me, be mad at the police.” The controversial statement was recently made by actress/comedian Tiffany Haddish, who has vowed to wear fur everyday to protest police killing black people. As reported by USA Today, Haddish also stated that animals are important, “to keep” her warm.
Haddish posted a video after taking a fur vest from a fan – the video, posted on Instagram, garnered over 230,000 likes and dozens of responses. One person wrote:
Dogs are apart of the wolf family, how would you feel if someone skinned your dog alive for a tacky fur coat ? Smh 🤦🏻 I’m black and Ik this is wrong.
Someone else wrote:
How does more violence and death solve anything?
If there are people who believe that animals are worth more than people of colour, should we direct our anger at the people or the animals? How does it make sense to condone violence in one case and condemn it another? People shouldn’t be killing animals for fur and they shouldn’t be killing other people because of their skin colour. And nowhere does it say that standing up for one cause precludes standing up for the other.
Some apparently support Haddish’s protest:
Good for you Tiff,Tiff. I wear fur and will continue to wear real fur. That’s that group thoughts not mine. And, I dare a mutha to throw sh*t on my fur. All these years they been wearing fur. As soon as other’s started sporting fur it’s taboo. UH, uh. I looks good in mine, Ha, ha Our culture loves fur. Wear it. I’m wearing my fur coat when I come to see ya.
PETA, which was called out in Haddish’s video, responded:
We love you, Tiffany, and as an animal rights organization, we advocate for and believe in kindness towards all, including animals,” the organization commented. “We hope that you choose to protest in a different way that doesn’t harm any humans or any animals, but is kind to all.”
