The Maryland man, behind a viral social media video which shows him jumping into the water on a pelican, has been arrested. As reported by CBS Baltimore, William Hunter Hardesty’s actions have resulted in charges of animal cruelty to migratory birds and the intentional feeding of pelicans.
State police arrested Hardesty on Friday after a warrant was issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission – he was booked into the Worcester County Detention Center.
The video, which was posted on Hardesty’s Facebook page, raised the ire of animal lovers across the nation. Despite the deluge of angry comments, Hardesty seemed to find humor in the entire situation.
In the video itself, he can be seen laughing, and on his Facebook page, he has posted multiple comments which appear to poke fun at what happened. On March 10, he wrote, “I’m so hungry I could eat a pelican.”
Hardesty will be extradited to Florida.
