A Colorado fishing guide recently recorded his dog killing a fawn and then he bragged about it on Instagram. Michael Garcia’s post, which has since been deleted, read:
Gus provided the best action at the end of the day. Got his first big game kill!!
The “big game kill” was a small fawn which still had its spots. Images of the baby deer show that Garcia dressed it after Gus’ fatal attack. KDVR reporters reached out to Garcia’s employer, Conejos River Anglers, and a spokesperson stated that Garcia’s social media post will result in the loss of his job.
Now, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife agency is investigating as well.
On July 22, Garcia created a public Facebook post about the incident, writing:
I would like to apologize for the offensive video, and pictures I posted a couple days ago. I truly am a lover of the outdoors and in no way would have thought it would get this out of hand! I’m sorry for everything! I’ve worked very hard my entire life, to figure all this out, and it would suck to lose everything, because of a poor decision on my part!
People make mistakes, and I’d appreciate the spotlight back on the positive side of hunting and fishing, instead of personally crucifying me, and everyone close to me. Gus is an awesome, kind, loving dog. I let him chase rabbits and squirrels everyday, and I promise you, this is the one and only time he’s ever caught a fawn.
Conejos river anglers has nothing to do with all this, I wasn’t working at the time, and I wasn’t even in Colorado at the time of the incident, please leave them alone!! In the video, I was trying to get the fawn away from Gus, while fighting off the mother doe, it was a freak accident, not premeditated. The fawn was skinned, de-boned, and placed into a game bag, in the sense that the meat and hide could be used, rather than wasted. I have since contacted the proper authorities, and I am meeting up with a game warden tomorrow, to get this all taken care of. I’m sorry, I messed up, hopefully the social media world will have some understanding.
