A man in Raleigh, North Carolina, has been charged after his dog, left tethered outside in the heat, died. As reported by WRAL News, 29-year-old Darius Lamont Richardson left his dog outside, without access to shade or water, on a day when the temperature climbed into the 90s.

Richardson’s dog, Sadie, was tied to a rope which was secured to a tree – a neighbor tells the news agency that the dog could barely move and was in distress on July 2. Ilona Young, who lives nearby, tried to help the struggling pit bull, but the ice water she provided to the dog was not enough to save her life. A few hours later, Young saw the dog dead in Richardson’s yard.

She regrets not reaching out to animal control earlier.

Richardson’s decision to leave his dog outside to suffer and die in the heat has resulted in a charge of animal cruelty. The local animal control agency hopes that other pet owners will ensure that their dogs are safe when the temperature rises – dogs who are left outside must have access to shade and a constant supply of water.

If you see a dog struggling outside in the heat – please reach out to your local animal control agency and/or police as soon as possible.
