A Florida woman is accused of beating her injured dog to death with a crowbar because she believed that it would be too “traumatizing” to take her pet to the vet. As reported by Local 10 News, 55-year-old Tammy Ewing admitted to the authorities that she first attempted to kill her dog with Tylenol PM and when that failed, she resorted to beating the dog to death with a crowbar.
Why was the woman trying to kill her dog?
Ewing’s dog, Sophie, had a torn ACL – Ewing believed that taking the dog to a veterinarian would be too traumatic so she opted to kill her pet at home. The incident took place at Ewing’s home in Englewood in January.
Ewing’s initial attempt to kill Sophie with drugs failed – she she found out that her dog was still alive the next morning, she resorted to killing Sophie with the crowbar. According to ABC 7 News, Ewing used Google to find a way to kill her dog at home.
The local animal control affidavit states:
“It is the opinion of this department that an act of intentional animal cruelty was committed by Tammy Ewing. Ms. Ewing failed to provide the medical attention the dog required for her torn ACL and after she overdosed the dog, instead of opting to take the dog to a veterinarian at that point she bludgeoned the dog to death in her backyard.”
A necropsy on the dog’s body revealed that she had been beaten to death. Ewing was arrested on Wednesday by a Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office deputy.
