In Central Islip, New York, a black SUV that had been leaving the federal courthouse ran over and killed a group of baby Canadian geese. The Suffolk SPCA has launched an animal cruelty investigation after surveillance video shows the act may have been done on purpose.
According to Long Island News 12, two adult geese and their babies had been crossing the road outside of the courthouse on Thursday when the vehicle made the left hand turn and ran over the babies without stopping. The adult geese are shown flying away and were not injured. Chief Roy Gross, of the Suffolk SPCA, stated it would have been proper for the driver to have stopped his vehicle. If the act was intentional, the driver of the vehicle can face animal cruelty charges.
Canada geese are protected from hunting and capture outside of designated hunting seasons in the United States by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and in Canada under the Migratory Birds Convention Act.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Suffolk SPCA at 631-382-7722.
