In Long Beach, California, the ex-boyfriend of a mother and her ten-year-old brother with special needs, will be going to prison. Jose Herrera, 24, was sentenced on Wednesday to nearly four years in state prison after pleading no contest to felony animal cruelty for throwing a child’s assistant dog off the balcony. According to MyNewsLA, Herrera is also banned from owning, living with or caring for any animal for ten years.

Herrera had been living with his ex-girlfriend in a home she shared with her mother and her ten-year-old “special needs” brother when on May 7, Herrera picked up the child’s one-year-old Chihuahua trained to be his assistant dog, and hurled it off the balcony. The dog named Pearl suffered a severe eye injury and needed medical care the family was not able to afford.

The dog is now in the care of Long Beach Animal Care Services, and is recovering from her injuries.

Herrera was convicted in 2015 of  second degree robbery.

Is there anybody in the family who could start a gofundme page to help them with medical cost for the pup??

This is one of those cases where if a rescue could help raise funds and get the dog’s vet bills paid, the dog would really be better back with the family. This is the service dog for a child. it was someone outside of the family who did this (although I think that monster should have to pay all the vet bills after being the one to hurt the dog). Glad the dog is going to be okay, but hate that it will likely go to a new family and the child in this family won’t have his service dog.

I AGREE. The dog survived thank goodness, but the family still has to adjust to life without the dog!! Unfair, unjust.

Just sad all the way around except for the sick POS that caused all the pain and suffering to this child, family and puppy. How can we help pay for the pups vet bills to get it back home with his family? GoFund me or name and number of Vet to call to contribute?

Sweet Jesus, this example of a human maggot should be sitting in prison for 40+ years – he has proven to be nothing more than a waste of flesh and blood – I hope the lousy sentence he got will get him shanked. He deserves to be treated like the trash he is.

Sad the dog was hurt by some low life. I feel bad for the family and hope they get the dog back. As for the creep who did it. Tell all the other prisoners what he did. Not only did he hurt an animal (which is usually a big no no in any prison); BUT .. he hurt an animal that helped a child with special needs. I’m sure the jerk will make plenty of new friends while he’s there.
