On Monday morning, rescuers from the Tiverton Fire Department in Rhode Island rescued a Canada goose stuck in the snow on the frozen Stafford Pond. A Good Samaritan reported seeing the goose on the pond seemingly not able to move.

When firefighters arrived, they determined the safest course of action would be to rescue the goose so local residents wouldn’t be motivated to venture out on the pond to save the bird and put themselves in danger.

Two firefighters, dressed in frozen ice gear along with ropes, cautiously proceeded out on the pond to capture the goose. One firefighter did partially fall through the ice in a thin ice area, but was safely able to regain his position and continued with his mission.

Firefighters were able to wrap the goose in a towel and carry it to the safety of the shore. The goose was turned over to Tiverton Animal Control.
No injuries were reported.
Fire officials say the outcome was the best-case scenario — for both the bird and the community. They’re using the incident as a reminder that frozen ponds and lakes can be dangerously unpredictable, even when they look solid.
