In North Hollywood, Karla Vicuna’s husband and their dog, Atreyu, had been on their morning walk in a North Hollywood neighborhood when she discovered her dog had accidentally ingested meth.
When the two returned home late last week with the four-year-old German shepherd and Husky blend, the couple noticed the dog had been acting strangely. Atreyu was not able to settle down, and his eye movement seemed odd. That’s when the family rushed their dog to the veterinarian.

While being examined, Atreyu’s heart rate was dangerously elevated, had a 103 degree fever and was not able to settle down. The veterinarian suspected toxins in his body and performed a drug test that came out positive for methamphetamine. It is suspected the dog ingested it while on his walk back through a neighborhood alleyway.
(We all know how quickly a dog can be sniffing around and grab something in his mouth.)
It is troubling to know, while investigating Atreyu’s ingestion of meth, that the problem has become more common. In fact, a few months ago, Atreyu ingested marijuana while walking in the park. That time, his symptoms were completely opposite; he had been drowsy, tried to stand but fell over and urinated on himself.

Dog owners are being asked to be especially cautious when walking their dogs. The American Kennel Club provides the following information to dog owners.
