In Atlantic City, New Jersey, this week a police officer braved the chilly waters in the bay to rescue an injured dog.

According to the Atlantic City Police, video footage recorded by the Atlantic City Fire Department, witnessed Officer Matt Schmidt jump into the water to save the dog.

When Officer Schmidt arrived, the frightened pooch had escaped from an animal control officer and still had the catch pole around his neck when he jumped into the bay near Venice Park.

Officer Schmidt removed his shoes, his uniform and his weapon and jumped into the water – swimming 100 yards against the strong current to reach the dog and safely bring him back to the shore. The officer used a spare bite pole to guide the dog back to land.

And even after the officer’s brave rescue efforts went viral, Officer Schmidt downplayed his heroics.

Honestly, I was just trying to do my job.

The dog was treated for his minor leg injury. He was later reunited with his owner.
