In Webster, Florida, a K-9 with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission found a missing hunter in Green Swamp East Wildlife Management Area; the hunter was found safe and sound thanks to the incredible work of a K-9 search team. The man, who had become separated from his hunting party, was located after a harrowing 24-hour ordeal.

The hunter was dropped off for a turkey hunt on March 28th. When he failed to return to the designated meeting spot by 2:30 pm, his worried companions reported him missing. Local authorities sprang into action, with K-9 units from Sumter County, Polk County and the Florida Department of Corrections joining the search.

The search continued through the night, with five K-9 teams and two bloodhounds combing the dense swamp terrain. Finally, around 7:00 am on March 29th, FWC K-9 Officer Malachi Wilkins deployed his canine partner, Havoc. Havoc, a skilled tracker with a background as a Southeastern Guide Dog, picked up the missing man’s scent and followed it for about a mile. Havoc, who used to be named Cabot had his name changed by officers from the FWC to reflect his energy level

At approximately 9:30 am, Havoc led Officer Wilkins directly to the missing hunter, who was thankfully found sitting on a fallen tree. The man was evaluated by medical personnel and reported to be in good health, shaken but unharmed.

FWC has nearly two dozen dogs statewide. Southeastern Guide Dogs and FWC have joined together to properly place dogs who may not work out as guide dogs, but fit perfectly as search canines. The dogs go through a six-month training program to teach them to track and sniff out weapons, illegally poached animals and when needed – to help locate a missing person.

This story serves as a powerful reminder of the invaluable role K-9 units play in search and rescue operations. Havoc’s keen sense of smell and unwavering dedication were instrumental in reuniting this lost hunter with his loved ones.
