A frightened three-week-old seal pup was rescued on Nantucket Island on Wednesday after a Good Samaritan found it crying in the middle of the road. According to the National Marine Life Center, three rescuers arrived as the pup was heading down a hill.

The “feisty” pup had no intentions of being netted, but he was soon safely crated.

after a bit of bushwhacking, we safely crated the healthy youngster and transported him to a safe spot in Quidnet where he can rest in full view of the sea and head out when he’s rested and ready.

The little guy didn’t have any injuries and was left in a secluded area where he would be able to get back to the ocean when he was ready. By Friday, rescuers checking on him, said the pup had returned to the water.

Pupping season on the island is from November to January. By three weeks of age, the pups have become self sufficient, and can become disoriented trying to find their mothers, according to the Boston Globe.

If you encounter one of these little ones, please do not try to rescue them yourself. Instead, reach out and call the proper authorities for help. Save their lives and protect yourself from injury.
