Diesel the donkey disappeared in 2019 in California; he has been spotted on camera living with a herd of elk. No kidding!
The unusual scene took place in Northern California’s Cache Creek Wilderness where Diesel disappeared according to CBS News. The family had been on a hike with Diesel when something spooked the donkey, and he ran away. The couple searched for weeks – even using drone equipment to find him, but never had any luck.

It was triathlete and hunter, Max Fennell who posted on Instagram that he saw the “blended herd” and videoed his experience.
Probably one of my wildest hunting trips to date. I bumped into a herd of elk that have adopted a donkey. I can’t get over seeing it and I’m amazed that the donkey looks happy and healthy!
That is in fact Diesel. He got away from me while packing out there 5 years ago. It was heartbreaking at the time. Glad to see he is helping the herd grow.

In an interview with news media, Terrie Drewry, Diesel’s owner, is sure that is his donkey in the video.
Fennell recorded the footage on a hunting trip in March and posted the video which showed the donkey standing around a herd of elk looking very comfortable and definitely a part of the herd. For a moment the entire herd, including the donkey, stare at the camera and then trot away.

As for future plans, we haven’t received any news to the contrary, but Drewry did state Diesel is happy, seems healthy, and “he’s living his best life.” Ironically, Diesel had originally been a wild donkey and was adopted by the family through the Bureau of Land Management program.
We are all happily guessing that Diesel’s wild side instincts kicked in, and this adorable donkey is doing just fine without the help of humans.
