Grieving for a lost pet is very personal for each of us. The love, fun, companionship and devotion we have had the privilege of having been part of during our dog’s life, is never long enough, and the day our loyal friends pass on to the Rainbow Bridge is no doubt one of the lowest and saddest moments in our lives.

Thanks to PetHelpful, we are directed to TikTok user @emmapanger who had to say goodbye to her best friend in September, but at the beginning of June, she saw a sweet sign from beyond the grave.

It had been the heartbreaking death of Dusty that her human had to deal with, but months later, and at the time that would have been Dusty’s birthday now in June, he left a sign. No kidding – the dear dog had been checking in with his human and assuring her that he was having fun in doggy heaven.

We all deal differently with the loss of our pets, and be assured you are not alone. Don’t feel bad by acknowledging your grief, and give yourself permission to cry, be alone or reach out to friends and family. Try not to center your thoughts on the last few days of your pet’s life, especially if they were painful. Try to think about the best times you had together. Remember his smile, his happy tail wags, his exuberance jumping around, and the pure joy both of you felt when you were together.

And if that doesn’t help, please know there are support groups to help. Do some research online. Here are just a few:

Pet Compassion Careline which provides 24/7 grief support with trained pet grief counselors.

Laps of Love which provides grief courses and 50-minute one-on-one support sessions with a grief counselor.

Everlife Support Groups by state.

Association for Pet Loss and Bereavement support groups available at specific times during the week.

Honor the life of your pet by reaching out to other animals in desperate need of help.

Actor Jimmy Stewart owned a “willful but beloved” golden retriever named Beau. In 1981, he read the poem he had written about Beau on the Johnny Carson show. He choked up with emotion at the end of the poem.

Take a moment and listen to Beau’s story as told by his human:

You’re not alone.
